The Power of Curiosity and Kindness

“Ivie and the Sea Monster”

A Tale of Curiosity, Kindness, and Wonder.

A family trip to Canada becomes an unexpected adventure when Ivie and Amelia discover something extraordinary beneath the surface of Okanagan Lake.

An Adventure at Okanagan Lake

Ivie loves marine life, especially sharks, and enjoys learning about the creatures that live in the water. But when she spots a long, unusual creature in the lake outside the family’s hotel, she cannot explain what she’s seen.

During a pedal-boat ride with Amelia, the mysterious creature appears again. When it helps Ivie after she falls into the water, the girls discover that this “monster” has a gentle side. Their fear turns into curiosity, and an unexpected friendship begins.

The girls want their family to share their discovery, but their parents and Amelia’s older sister do not believe them. Determined to prove their story, they take the older sister’s phone without permission, hoping to photograph the creature. Their plan leads to disappointment, an apology, and a chance to talk about respecting other people’s belongings.

As the trip comes to an end, Amelia’s older sister has to set her phone aside. Looking out the window, she notices the lake’s beauty—and something she never expected to see.

Lessons from Ivie and the Sea Monster

  • Keep curiosity alive: Ivie’s love of marine life reminds us that a child’s interests can turn an ordinary experience into a chance to learn and explore.
  • Look beyond appearances: The creature’s kindness invites readers to reconsider their first impressions and recognize that the unfamiliar may surprise them.
  • Listen with patience: The girls’ struggle to be believed reminds parents and older siblings to make room for children’s stories, feelings, and questions.
  • Take responsibility for your choices: Wanting to prove something does not excuse taking someone’s belongings without permission. The girls’ mistake opens a conversation about asking first and apologizing when we get things wrong.
  • Notice the world around you: When Amelia’s older sister looks away from her phone, she discovers a beautiful landscape and an unexpected moment of wonder.
  • Share the adventure: Ivie and Amelia’s friendship and the experience they eventually share with the older sister show how a memorable moment can bring people closer.
